This chapter examines discipline and practical instruction of the soldiers as well as Puritan iconoclasm, which presented a curious deviation from strong demands of obedience and order. It shows that Royalist and Parliamentarian chaplains had different attitudes towards Christian military education. Whereas the godly were not averse to using the weight of religious prestige to reinforce secular ordinances and war-related advice, Royalists chaplains were hesitant to facilitate warfare with spiritual counsel. Hence, while they published a few treatises of Christian advice to the King’s soldiers, they concentrated more on trying to reclaim Parliamentarians back as loyal subjects than instructing their own men to fight. This chapter also looks at how army discipline was strengthened by religious arguments and how some concerns, namely iconoclasm and armed uprising against the King, were justified even though they seemingly were in discrepancy with military obedience.

摘要
