‘It is not without a mystery, I suppose, that the old Israelites had an Armory in their Temple: they would shew us, That these two cannot well be parted’. Thus began the English translation of The Swedish Discipline in 1632, summing up how important religion was to warfare from the early modern perspective. This study picks up this perspective, examining religious instruction and indoctrination of soldiers as well as dehumanisation of the enemy during the first English Civil War.
