The rapid urbanization process that is straining the capacity of worldwide cities to provide decent services to citizens cannot remain indifferent to the present digital era. New technologies are particularly efficient on information and communication fields which has allowed the development of innovative schemes to analyze, understand, and enhance urban areas. Among these initiatives, smart cities have led most efforts to improve living standards, sustainability, and urban operations. Despite literature has widely screened this subject from different perspectives, the governance aspect is still pending further analysis. Aiming at filling this gap, this chapter deepens into the governance of smart cities in order to outline a baseline to be deemed in nascent technologies such as urban digital twins (UDTs) or metaverse. Existing commonalities between them facilitate this process. The review of contributions on UDTs served to reveal the lack of studies discussing implications of the UDTs in the governing process of cities. An assessment framework is suggested as future line of investigation to evaluate the contribution of UDTs implemented worldwide to the governance processes.
