Ultrasound of the Aorta
摘要
Aortic pathologies, including aortic dissection and aneurysm, are rare clinical entities. Their diagnostic workup often relies on having a high clinical suspicion; however, due to a multitude of clinical presentations, they may be missed. The misdiagnosis of these pathologies can have catastrophic results for patients. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) can rapidly diagnose aortic dissection and aneurysms in hemodynamically unstable patients or identify secondary findings of aortic emergencies that can lead to earlier consultation with surgical specialists or comprehensive imaging. POCUS also allows for the screening of these disease states without the use of radiation in a noninvasive manner. POCUS should be integrated into the diagnostic evaluation of patients where aortic emergencies are a part of the differential diagnosis, leading to more rapid and definitive care.
