In recent years, global social justice movements and a growing awareness of health inequities have made the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) major priorities in academic medicine. In this chapter, we define DEI and demonstrate how a DEI lens can be applied to all aspects of a career in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). We describe strategies to diversify the POCUS workforce, build an inclusive POCUS program, and promote belongingness and professional success among historically underrepresented individuals within the POCUS community. As most POCUS experts are dedicated teachers, we outline how to make POCUS education inclusive, accessible, and sensitive to different styles of learners and learners from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Finally, we describe DEI principles within the clinical practice of POCUS by incorporating a trauma-informed approach to POCUS image acquisition, developing skills in cultural humility and cross-cultural communication, and maintaining awareness of the roles of gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexuality, and culture during interactions with patients. By framing all aspects of a POCUS career within a DEI context, POCUS leaders will promote a more equitable workplace, learning environment, and clinical environment.

摘要
