As the demand for research in advanced clinical ultrasound grows, understanding the unique challenges and dynamics of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) research is essential for academic progress and improving patient care. POCUS research focused on patient-centered outcomes, procedural safety, reduction in morbidity, and throughput improvement has already highlighted the impact of POCUS on clinical practice. However, despite existing evidence, POCUS is yet to be fully integrated into mainstream clinical protocols. This highlights the continued need for high-quality research to support its integration and improve patient outcomes. Crucial elements for conducting POCUS research include selecting a well-defined research question, and ensuring proper methodology. Developing and leading research teams, along with mentoring future researchers is also key. Grant funding plays an important role in supporting research endeavors. In this chapter, we discuss unique aspects and challenges of POCUS research that will appeal to new and experienced investigators alike. We discuss strategies for conducting high-quality research, improving the research processes and experiences, and strategies to increase the likelihood of successful funding, publication, and dissemination.
