Medical ultrasound has evolved substantially over the past 80 years. Once relegated only to the radiology suite, ultrasound has expanded to be used directly at the bedside by a wide range of clinicians, allowing for more rapid diagnoses and enhanced procedural safety and success rates. Highly valued for its lack of ionizing radiation, relatively low cost compared to other imaging modalities, repeatability, and portability, point-of-care ultrasound has been integrated into medical school and residency training curricula as a core competency of a practicing clinician. In the last 25 years, the number of US and Canadian fellowships in advanced clinical ultrasound has rapidly expanded with a board certification option for emergency medicine physicians and rapid adoption among other medicine specialties. As technology evolves and access continues to expand, there is an increasing need for robust training and resources to keep pace. This chapter provides a brief history of point-of-care ultrasound, its current state, and future directions.
