EDGE Certification of Public Schools in Brazil: A Case Study

The environmental impacts resulting from building construction persist throughout the project's lifecycle. One strategy for promoting sustainability in construction is adhering to green building certification programs, such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE). These certifications recognize buildings exhibiting high environmental performance, low consumption of natural and energy resources, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. However, the certification process often involves complex assessment methods and requires compliance with criteria that may incur prohibitive costs, particularly for public buildings in Brazil. This paper aimed to apply and evaluate the EDGE certification process for a model public school developed by the Brazilian federal government. The applicability and usability of the EDGE application, which is available free of charge, were examined for three Brazilian municipalities with different climates. The findings suggested that the tool aids in designing solutions, particularly in addressing energy-related concerns.
