Recently published reviews on the topics of circular economy (CE) and of life cycle assessment (LCA) provide limited evidence of implementation and progress in the Global South and specifically Africa when compared globally. This chapter reports on a review of the literature based on a systematic search conducted on Google Scholar, to reflect on the research undertaken since 2015 for specifically Africa on CE and LCA, with focus on their connections, and relevance for sustainable development (SD). Aspects of the bibliometric analysis of the review are presented, but the focus of the chapter is to provide a synthesis of the themes covered by research on CE and LCA in Africa since 2015. Comparative findings are set out with reference to the five major regions of Africa, thus providing a more in-depth view compared to consideration of the continent as a whole. The regional focus is unique and adds insight to the body of knowledge on CE, LCA, their connections, and SD—not only for Africa, but also globally. Most importantly, the results presented in this paper indicate a definite contribution for Africa in terms of research in this field and of a more significant nature than generally reported up to now. This finding highlights that results of literature reviews are dependent on selection of data bases and search strategies, which might unintentionally lead to under- or over-representation of research contributions from certain parts of the world and thus not providing an accurate representation of reality.
