Despite the well-documented misogynistic culture in Silicon Valley, the media have largely stayed mute about how a young female entrepreneur faced structural oppression. A journalistic account about the rise and fall of Theranos—Elizabeth Holmes’ company—revealed that a gender-neutral approach was used until her sentencing, at which the account was laden with gender bias. The miniseries The Dropout at times questioned unequal treatment of women and men founders. But these grievances were not taken seriously, and instead the Holmes character was shown to be always in a stage of “becoming” through her trying to meet others’ expectations of a young woman entrepreneur in a capitalist patriarchy.
