Introduction
摘要
Media texts reinforce an ideology that a stable financial market relies on gender hierarchy. Business frauds upset market equilibrium, which could be restored by media texts setting up boundaries of who can enter the markets and by punishing those who trespass them. Stories of fraudsters fascinate the audience because they assure that capitalism is a sound system after the bad apples are removed. This introductory chapter explains how four white-collar criminals—Bernie Madoff, Anna Sorokin, Elizabeth Holmes, and Sam Bankman-Fried—were chosen. It suggests that feminist political economy is the most appropriate approach to examine how unequal gender relations constitute capitalist patriarchy in the texts. It explains why narrative analysis is the most appropriate methodology and lists the questions to interrogate documentary and fictionalised media texts.
