A notable number of rappers in France are of West African descent. In dealing with their invisibility in French society and declaring their origins, they redefine their identity and defy French notions of ethnicity and citizenship. Nonetheless, this connection between France and West Africa does not get much consideration in scholarship. This chapter will analyze the lyrics of the hip-hop collective Sexion d’Assaut. It will contrast the representations of France with that of the various West African countries and discuss the role of individual and collective memory in immigrants’ narratives. These Afro-French rappers’ music provides an apt example of the role of arts in political and social debates of memory of immigration and the current experiences of Black people in France vis-à-vis their countries of origin in West Africa.
