Smart Technologies and Approaches in Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation: Implications for Policy-Making

This chapter examines the implications of smart technologies and approaches for policy-making in climate change mitigation and adaptation. Innovative solutions are essential as the global community faces a pressing need to address climate change. Smart technologies and approaches offer promising opportunities to enhance efforts in mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change. These include renewable energy technologies, sustainable transportation technologies, climate-resilient agriculture and food production technologies, nature-based solutions, smart city technologies, climate modelling and monitoring and early warning systems, green finance and investment technologies, and circular economy and sustainable consumption technologies. Based on a document review-based approach, the chapter showcases the successful implementation of smart technologies and approaches in real-world contexts, both in mitigation and adaptation strategies. Using the analysis as its basis, the chapter offers valuable policy recommendations for integrating smart technologies into mitigation and adaptation strategies. It emphasised the importance of proactive policy adjustments to leverage the full potential of smart technologies and approaches, while addressing associated challenges and ethical considerations. The chapter calls for policymakers to embrace these smart technologies and approaches, and foster collaboration among scientists, technologists, and policymakers to drive innovation, accelerate progress, and effectively respond to the global climate crisis.
