Orla has worked as RTÉ’s Eastern Europe correspondent, and the BBC’s foreign correspondent based in Los Angeles, Rome, Jerusalem, Johannesburg, Islamabad and Istanbul. Orla Guerin grew up in Dublin and began her broadcasting career at the Irish public service broadcaster RTÉ. After working as a national reporter she was sent to Vienna and then to Moscow to be the organisation’s Eastern Europe correspondent, until financial cutbacks meant she had to return to Dublin. Orla then continued to cover Eastern Europe and the break-up of Yugoslavia as a travelling foreign news reporter, while often having to borrow resources or beg lifts from the BBC or ITN on the ground. After a few years, she moved to London to work as a reporter for BBC national news and was soon sent abroad to Los Angeles and from there to Rome to report on Southern Europe. She has remained abroad ever since, covering all the main stories of the last few decades from bases in Italy, Israel, South Africa and now Turkey.
