This chapter examines the career of the second overseas-based foreign correspondent Elizabeth Blunt. Just a few weeks after Diana Goodman was appointed to Bonn, Liz became the West Africa correspondent in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Liz at first found it difficult to be taken seriously in the newsroom, due to her background in the World Service “Talks” department. With a reporting brief covering 20 African countries from Abidjan, Liz is most renowned for her calm and resourceful coverage of the 1990 killing of Liberia’s President Samuel Doe, along with more than 60 of his soldiers. Following this posting Liz moved into mostly behind-the-scenes producing roles in radio and television before travelling out to Ethiopia as a correspondent in the last few years of her career.
