Following a number of internal reports and inquiries carried out in the 1980s the BBC finally appointed its first overseas-based female foreign correspondent in 1986. Diana Goodman hailed from New Zealand and before landing in the national radio newsroom, she had worked for a number of regional radio stations in Britain and her home country. Her appointment to the Bonn position was greeted by much fanfare inside the BBC and made headlines in the press. Diana covered frontline fighting in Lebanon and Romania and her career, with postings in Bonn, Berlin and Moscow, concentrated on the aftermath of the fall of communism in the Eastern European states. Diana was a pioneer within the organisation for managing a challenging career alongside her role as a parent.
