In 1980 Kate Adie burst onto our television screens, making women believe that anything was possible in terms of their careers. Already a veteran of local and regional radio and TV, Kate shot to fame as a national reporter while reporting live on the Iranian Embassy siege in central London (1980). Over the next three decades she was always in the thick of conflict from the American bombing of Tripoli (1986) to the Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing (1989) and the first Gulf War (1991). Her many achievements and career firsts belie the fact that over the course of her career she had many battles to fight both within the BBC and externally with politicians who questioned the veracity of her reporting. Kate’s visual presence on our screens also hid the fact that the BBC was not always enabling other women to break down barriers in their reporting careers.
