This chapter provides an overview of the employment of women in international news roles since the start of the BBC in 1922 to the 1980s. After this, the correspondents’ tales take the story onwards. While in the early days the BBC began as an exemplary employer of women in behind-the-scenes functions, few females, other than MPs or well-known public figures, were able to have their voices broadcast on air. During World War II Audrey Russell became a national radio reporter and ended up as the first official woman war correspondent for the Corporation. But between this time and the 1980s, progress for women in on-air positions slowed to a snail’s pace. This chapter analyses documents from the BBC archives at Caversham, audio archives from the British Library and articles and books from scholars of the organisation including Jean Seaton, Kate Murphy, and Suzanne Franks.
