Power electronics technology deals with power conversion techniques that convert electric power from one form to another, using power semiconductor devices. Depending on the power, voltage, current, frequency ratings, and the type of power conversion, these semiconductor devices can be IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors), power MOSFETs, thyristors, power diodes, MCTs (MOS-Controlled Thyristors), GTOs (Gate Turn-Off Thyristors), and Triacs. Depending on the type of power conversion and the energy flow, the following four main categories of power converters exist:
