Germany has rapidly developed specialized pedagogical and psychological practices for deradicalizing violent ‘Islamism’ since 2005. This emergence was driven by domestic radicalization, the phenomenon of foreign fighters, and a growing Salafist scene. The core methodology adopted is reintegrative systemic counselling, which operates on the premise that individual development is non-linear and open to change. Systemic counselling proves highly suitable for deradicalization due to its contextual understanding of problems and its capacity to engage indirectly with clients through their social environment, such as families. It also offers an extensive repertoire of methods for addressing biographical crises, often linked to radicalization. This manual uniquely integrates radicalization explanations with systemic counselling interventions, offering practical guidance, case studies, and insights into developing a systemic approach. It also includes valuable guest contributions, extending the systemic framework to other forms of extremism.
