The demand for dermal fillers in the field of minimally invasive aesthetic medicine is increasing and this has led to a rise in reported complications. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are the most commonly used among skin volumizers. Most of the observed adverse effects are usually mild and include bluish discoloration of the skin (Tyndall effect) caused by the HA filler being placed too superficial. The shorter wavelengths of light scatter more than the longer wavelengths. Hence the blue light is scattered nearly ten times more than the red light when passing through particulate materials. The HA fillers that have more particles are likely to cause Tyndall effect. The HA can be removed safely with the injection of the enzyme hyaluronidase into the treated area.
