In 2015, migration truly became a global phenomenon, as all geographic corners of the world simultaneously faced a migratory crisis. North America was facing a migration crisisMigration crisis whose roots were in Central America. Southeast Asia was facing the Rohingya crisis, the result of ethnic cleansing orchestrated by the Myanmar authorities. And Europe was facing a migration crisisMigration crisis derived from the Syrian civil war, where the Mediterranean route became a ring of death in which it accounted for more than 60% of migrant deaths worldwide. To put it in other words, in 2015, 3.3% of the world’s population (i.e., 244 million people) was an international migrant (IOMInternational Organization for Migration (IOM) 2018). And in the period 2005–2015, international migration saw an increase of 0.5%, from 2.8 to 3.3%. Over a period of less than fifteen years, international migration grew as much as in the period 1970–2000.
