This chapter discusses best practices for implementing a research-based positive youth development (PYD) model. The chapter draws on the experience of Wisconsin’s 4-H programs implementing the 4-H Thriving Model to guide all aspects of program development, from understanding programmatic context to evaluating progress, reporting outcomes, and ultimately taking actions to improve programs to benefit all youth participating in the program. We discuss how the 4-H Thriving Model has unique aspects that make it practical for youth educators and consequently has visible impacts on individual youth, youth programs, and the overall organizational capacity to deliver a high-quality program. Through the case study, we illustrate how adoption of a model, when implemented at multiple levels, can have significant impacts on the quality of programs offered to young people regardless of the size, funding level, or staff capacity of a PYD program.
