Social and Emotional Learning: The Process and Product of Positive Youth Development
摘要
Youth development programs are essentially all about supporting social and emotional learning (SEL). Through engaging projects and activities, young people have a chance to set goals, manage emotions, and connect with others. This chapter looks broadly at what SEL is, why it’s important, and how youth programs support it—whether caught by the learning environment or taught as part of the program design. It serves to remind us not to get too preoccupied by the activity or project itself; they are vehicles. Instead, we need to intentionally keep the young person’s corresponding social and emotional learning front and center. All high-quality youth programs, by definition, create conditions for young people to develop and practice some set of social–emotional skills. Social and emotional learning is integral to both the process and product of positive youth development.
