Fostering Youth Sparks and Social Capital for Greater Equity in Positive Youth Outcomes
摘要
Search Institute has conducted an array of studies on the important impacts of sparks, which are deep interests or passions that, when illuminated and nurtured, provide young people joy, energy, and purpose. This research ranges from local to national studies that probe for youth’s experiences with sparks across contexts, demographics, and ages. In this chapter, we discuss this research, demonstrating the positive impact sparks have on young people, and we encourage youth development practitioners to see the important roles they and their community programs play in helping youth identify their sparks and in supporting young people as they develop those sparks. We argue that when youth development professionals and volunteers are equipped to and do help young people develop their sparks, they provide relationship-based resources and opportunities, or social capital, that can often have an impact beyond simply helping youth to pursue a hobby. To illuminate these connections, in this chapter, we pair Search Institute’s extensive research about sparks with research on social capital. In doing so, we provide guidance and tools for how community youth programs and practitioners can support youth in developing sparks, and in helping young people to strengthen and leverage social capital.
