This chapter covers some background concepts which are used throughout the book, and which are necessary to understand in order to follow the later chapters. As reciprocal recommender systems are often adapted from user-item recommender systems, this chapter is mainly concerned with the basics of how user-item recommender systems of different types are constructed. Later on, additional general topics are covered, including preference aggregation and evaluation.
