This chapter examines the early history of police studies of misconduct and the development of studies that used ethnographic methods to reveal police behaviour and attitudes (1972–2004). It goes on to chart the beginning of the use of the ‘Klockars scale’ scenario surveys (1978–1998, then 2003–2005). Then the main points from an early study of police ‘improbity’ in 1978 are examined in some detail. This is contextualised by looking at Klockars and Kutnjak et al.’s groundbreaking study in 2004. This leads into reflections and discussions of Westmarland’s follow-up studies of 2004 and 2005. This final part brings it back to the autoethnographic aspect of the book overall.
