Making Rabies History: Communication Strategies That Put Rabies on the Map
摘要
In 2006, a team of health communication and related experts began a unique effort to increase rabies awareness efforts globally and, ultimately, changed how educational efforts are approached for this historic zoonosis. Rabies, once overlooked even among the neglected tropical diseases, was brought back to the forefront through the creation of the World Rabies Day (WRD) initiative, an event that engaged a host of global partners and empowered individuals to drive rabies prevention and control efforts in their local areas. The WRD initiative resulted in changes in public health policy, increased global collaboration and coordination, and enhanced resource allocation. The lessons learned from this effort are applicable to other zoonoses and led to the founding of other world health days, such as One Health Day. In this chapter, we share the story and strategies behind WRD and introduce you to some of the people who were there in the beginning. We also discuss communication strategies that were used in a vaccine supply crisis and enhancing education around wildlife, particularly bats in the Americas.
