Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) refers to a group of chronic autoimmune diseases that mostly affect the mucous membranes and skin with sub epithelial blistering lesions. MMP lesions typically manifest as erythematous plaques and erosions that are covered by pseudomembrane. The gingiva is the most affected site in oral mucosa, and these lesions are often described as desquamative gingivitis. Topical or systemic corticosteroids have been the first choice for MMP treatment. To date, there are few clinical cases that described the association of photobiomodulation (PBM) to immunosuppressive therapies and PBM only. Satisfactory results, mainly immediate relief of symptomatic lesions, have been described for some patients, and further investigation is necessary to ensure the effect of PBM as a single modality of treatment.
