Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a mucocutaneous disorder more prevalent in women between 30 and 65 years old. The buccal mucosa is the most affected site. OLP can clinically present with different appearances, such as reticular, papular, plaque-type, bullous, atrophic, and erosive. Many cases of reticular, papular, and plaque-type OLP are asymptomatic, requiring no treatment. The atrophic and erosive types are usually symptomatic. Patients with these forms of OLP often complain of severe pain, burning sensation, and difficulty eating and maintaining oral hygiene. The diagnosis is based on the association of clinical and histologic features. For symptomatic cases, topical or systemic corticosteroids are initial usually the treatment of choice. The number of health professionals using photobiomodulation as an alternative treatment has progressively increased.
