Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the oral mucosa characterized by round-shaped ulcers mainly in nonkeratinized oral mucosa. These lesions might cause severe pain, disturb speaking and eating activities, and impact the quality of life. RAS can be classified into minor, major, and herpetiform ulcers. Many types of topic treatments have been proposed for pain relief and to accelerate wound healing. Recent studies have shown that photobiomodulation therapy can help with edema reduction, tissue regeneration, decreased healing time, and pain relief. Notably, photobiomodulation offers these therapeutic effects without the adverse effects commonly associated with corticosteroids. However, there is a need for more accurate studies with longer follow-ups to improve the evidence.

These lesions might cause severe pain, disturb speaking and eating activities, and impact the quality of life. RAS can be classified into minor, major, and herpetiform ulcers.
