Radiation therapy plays a key role in the curative-intent management of head and neck cancer. However, it may lead to a variety of acute and late toxicities, such as oral mucositis, xerostomia, dysphagia, and osteoradionecrosis (ORN). ORN is characterized by the presence of necrotic bone exposed for at least 3 months in a patient with a history of previous radiotherapy in the head and neck region. Several staging or grading systems of ORN have been proposed, and the ideal treatment will depend, among other factors, on the staging of the disease and the health status of the patient. The use of photobiomodulation in the treatment of ORN is an interesting alternative, since it is a noninvasive tool, without contraindications and side effects for the patient.
