This chapter is a compact summary of all fuels that have at least once been used successfully to replace gasoline or diesel fuels for automobiles. These alternatives span near-drop-in replacements to a number of exotics that would not be considered practical. In the chapters to follow, only a subset of these that have reasonable environmental and energy potential will be discussed in detail.
