Novice Teachers and Burnout
摘要
This chapter reports on a study which used an autobiographical diary method triangulated with a questionnaire to investigate both the positive aspects and the challenges encountered by novice teachers (defined as those who have been teaching for less than 5 years), the effectiveness of their pre-service preparation, the adequacy of the in-service support available to them, the coping strategies they employed, and their plans to continue in the profession. The results indicated that although the novice teachers in this study reported many positive aspects related to the profession, they also faced numerous challenges for which the mainly theoretical nature of their pre-service education did not sufficiently prepare them. Furthermore, although the teachers developed a range of coping strategies, the support they received from their institutions was often inadequate for managing the difficulties they faced in the real classroom, leaving many feeling burned out and considering leaving the profession.
