There is growing interest in precise measurement of motor impairment during early stroke recovery. To achieve this objective in demanding clinical settings, it is critical to implement efficient and robust protocols. The devices and procedures used in this ongoing study were developed to address the practical challenges of inpatient rehabilitation facilities yet still acquire kinematics and kinetics. The first ten participants were enrolled an average of 34.1 ± 22.4 days post-stroke and completed 3 ± 1 weekly inpatient evaluations before being discharged. Functional measures such as reaching distance against gravity may not be feasible in early stroke recovery, but other precise measures are available to provide valuable insight into the development of motor impairment.
