Increasing demand one of those task-level goals might result in lower performance on the other goals, i.e. there might be trade-offs between task goals. Despite, that age-related increases in trade-off between task goals have not been demonstrated, trade-offs between stepping goals have been hypothesized to lower performance more in older compared young adults. The main goal of this study was to assess differences in accuracy-speed-stability trade-offs during stepping between young and older adults. As sensorimotor function degrades with age, we investigated whether task goal trade-offs were associated with sensorimotor function. Although, older adults performed worse on accuracy, accuracy-speed-stability trade-offs in stepping did not differ between young and older adults. We found little association between sensorimotor functions and trade-offs. These results indicate that accuracy in older adults is decreased irrespective of trade-offs between stepping goals.
