Agriculture is among the sectors that wield much potential to steer Africa’s job creation, facilitate food and nutrition security, and gender equality. However, most young people on the continent do not find agriculture unattractive. There is limited academic and policy research on how the African youths, on whose shoulders the future rests, can be mobilised to return and revive the continent’s agricultural trajectory. This chapter closes this scholarly and policy gap. Drawing on various literature sources, both academic and grey, this chapter explores the challenges that African youths face when entering the agricultural and agribusiness sectors. It also identifies the approaches that may encourage youth participation in the sector. This chapter focuses on actions that various actors (public and private) can take to make the agricultural sector more attractive to the youth, emphasising how to increase incentives for participation of youths which not compromise productivity.
