In this chapter, we develop foundational ideas in mechanics and state Newton’s laws of motion for mechanical systems. We then derive the conservation of linear and angular momentum, discuss the concepts of energy and work, and study the applications of these ideas to many-particle systems. Finally, we discuss systems with changing mass and some finer points related to writing the conservation of momentum for these systems.
