The book introduction outlines the importance of home cultures for residents of asylum-reception centers seeking a sense of home across borders. An ethnographic vignette illustrates the complex relationships between humans and things related to issues of exile, security, and home. Here, I present the key focus of this book as seeking to understand what it takes to “home” as well as the particularities of home cultures and makeshift homes as translated to asylum-reception centers. The chapter introduces the social, material, temporal and institutional specifics in this respect, as well as the tactics for navigating challenges in asylum and exile, the key terms applied in this book and the objectives of each chapter.
