Distributed Recycling of Biobased Thermoplastics

The growing concerns about the environmental impact of the massive use of plastics have led to search of alternatives with lower environmental footprint. Among these alternatives is the development of biobased and biodegradable plastics. However, end-of-life scenarios still play a crucial role in reducing the environmental impact of these materials, especially if we consider the implantation of circular economy models. In this regard, mechanical recycling is the most interesting valorization method, due to its relative simplicity and its availability. Nevertheless, the production of biobased thermoplastics is still small, thus making it impossible to implant conventional (centralized) recycling systems for biodegradable and biobased plastics. A potential solution is the use of a distributed recycling approach, in which consumers recycle their own plastic waste. This approach is cheaper and more accessible in some cases, especially with the rise of additive manufacturing methods. This chapter describes the current situation, including the most important research results, of distributed mechanical recycling for biobased and biodegradable plastics.
