While the historic resolution of the contentious ‘Irish question’ in 1921, via treaty, was hugely consequential in constitutional, political and military terms, it was not just the Financial Times which struggled to explain its immediate economic import for either southern Ireland or Britain. The granting of dominion status to southern Ireland in 1921 was replete with multiple meanings, but few of them were immediately economic.
