This chapter readjusts the (micro-)lens to record minute nonhuman lives (maggots, ants, cockroaches) swarming and crawling in and out of a diverse array of films. While most are typically considered insignificant or abject and are exterminated daily in vast numbers, interviews with animal wranglers, cinematographers, and directors reveal various degrees of recognition of their rights, at least while (used) on set. Research documents changing attitudes over the last three decades, and confirms regulations and welfare standards in place for some of the most neglected categories of being. While these are stricter and clearer in international (European and Hollywood) productions, encouragingly such nameless, almost uncountable individuals are currently treated with far greater empathy and respect on Greek film sets, compared to the past.
