This chapter discusses heart-wrenching instances of staged canine deaths, canicides, and burials from numerous Greek and Greek-directed films of various genres and eras, both studio productions (such as Aliki dictator/Dictator Alice [Takis Vougiouklakis, 1972]) and auteur works (Yorgos Lanthimos’s Kinds of Kindness [2024]). Alongside close textual analyses, interviews with human protagonists, directors and screenwriters, cinematographers, animal wranglers, and special effects artists reveal unknown details of faked/staged dog deaths, both natural and unnatural. However, one particular interview seemingly reveals a devastating secret hidden in plain sight: a dog being murdered in reality for the sake of cinema. This shocking disclosure should change the way we view some foundational, celebrated texts.
