This chapter connects Greek films with distinctively dissimilar aesthetics via rare, endangered, or extinct avian presences. The segment titled I teleftaia nanohina/The Last Pygmy Goose, from veteran director Pantelis Voulgaris’s sublime collaboration with avid amateur ornithophile and celebrated author Giorgos Skabardonis in Ola einai dromos/It’s a Long Road (1998), as well as Panos H. Koutras’s colourful, playful, and moving Dodo (2022), are analysed at length. Extensive conversations with the directors and screenwriters, alongside the human protagonists, cinematographers, producers, and animal handlers are included to discuss writing about, shooting or performing feathered individuals and species when access to (moving images of) them is limited to non-existent.
