This chapter on Nikos Koundouros’s Mikres Afrodites/Young Aphrodites (1963) is in dialogue with previous academic work that has used nonhuman signifiers, particularly the lupine one, to talk about representations of female sexualities and the male(-centred) gaze in both auteurist and ‘commercial’ Greek cinema of the 1960s. While acknowledging the importance of such work, at the same time, the chapter argues for adopting an antispeciesist feminist framework in order to avoid the naturalisation of speciesist stereotypes. In the process, and with the support of evidence produced via new interviews with the protagonists and the director’s widow, some of the previous claims are subverted, while others are redirected.
