The introductory chapter positions this study within the wider, quickly expanding scholarly field of critical animal (film) studies. It offers an overview of relevant literature and provides contextualising information about Greece and animals. Furthermore, this introduction describes the methodology, outlines the main research questions and goals, and introduces new, key theoretical terms. Besides noting the gap in scholarship, the chapter highlights the ethical urgency for such a study to appear and the need to re-evaluate, also as a hermeneutic key, the nonhumans’ role in the history of Greek cinema, while it proposes a model of non-anthropocentric spectatorship and a renewed paradigm for nonhuman-human animal relationships that extends beyond the film industry.
