Hemoptysis is the expectoration of blood originating from the lungs or lower respiratory tract, frequently attributed to bleeding from the bronchial arteries. Computed tomography (CT) and CT angiography of the chest with intravenous contrast are the preferred diagnostic modalities for determining the underlying etiology of the bleeding. In certain cases, bronchoscopy may also be indicated for further evaluation. Effective management of hemoptysis necessitates treatment of the identified underlying cause as recurrence is common in the absence of targeted therapy. Bronchial arterial embolization is a viable therapeutic option for cases of massive or recurrent hemoptysis, particularly when a contributing artery is visualized on CT angiography.
