Purpose: The research goal is to demonstrate the application of integrated Lean Six Sigma and Sustainability tools to identify ways to reduce electricity consumption and subsequent cost at Higher Educational Institutions (HEI). Study Design/Methodology/Approach: The Lean Six Sigma DMAIC (Define-Measure- Analyze-Improve-Control) methodology was applied to reduce electrical use within a regional campus where electrical rates and consumption are increasing on campus. Findings: The findings of this study demonstrate the usefulness of applying the Lean Six Sigma DMAIC methodology to understand the reasons for higher than necessary electrical energy consumption on a fairly small regional campus, with the goal to incorporate lean sustainability practices by faculty and staff to reduce electrical energy consumption. The key root causes found were as follows: no one “owned” turning off the lights on campus, there was an overabundance of fluorescent security lighting that remained on 24/7 that consisted of one of the highest energy consumption of the light system, and the project to install low energy LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) were stalled. Improvements were identified to reduce or eliminate these key root causes. Research Limitations: The system that provided data, provided inaccurate data, so improvements to the data collection system needed to be implemented to be able to assess improvement specific to the future implemented recommendations. It would be difficult to get a before and after improvement assessment with the current information system in place. Practical Implications: This research has theoretical implications adding to the literature on LSS applications in HEI’s. The study has implications for university facilities management to identify ways to reduce electricity consumption on campus in cost effective ways for educational facilities; and explore possibilities for future enhancements beyond electricity consumption and aid in implementing continuous improvement practice within higher educational facilities. Originality/Value: This research contributes to the field by demonstrating a case study that combines a Lean Six Sigma focus on waste identification and reduction along with incorporating practical sustainability approaches to reduce electrical consumption rates and subsequent costs of electricity. This is an important case study application combining Lean and Sustainability methods.
