Purpose: The project's objective was to improve operational efficiency within an academic educational laboratory in an engineering school. Design/Methodology/Approach: Lean Six Sigma methodology, including 5S principles, was used to improve laboratory efficiency. Findings: Integrating the Lean and Six Sigma principles into the educational laboratory improved efficiency, minimised waste, and maximised resource allocation. 5S principles, such as Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain, aided in the methodical organisation of the lab, elimination of unnecessary steps, and minimisation of time wasted searching for specific tools, consumables, or equipment. Research Implications/Limitations: The project is specific to one type of university laboratory with the engineering school, but the results can be leveraged across other laboratories, including research laboratories and teaching laboratories. Originality/Value: To the author's knowledge, this study is the first to apply Lean Six Sigma methods in a university laboratory. The methods employed can be leveraged across all laboratory types in HEIs to improve laboratory layout and ergonomics.
