Purpose: This study was conducted and tested in a healthcare facility, but the management of the presentation and symptoms of AC is generalisable to all healthcare facilities worldwide. The paper aims to improve the management and identification of patients with acute cholecystitis (AC) in an Italian hospital unit (HU) in an attempt to reduce long-term complications. Design/Methodology/Approach: A Business Processing Modelling and Notation (BPMN) workflow was used for the study to identify Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) suitable for modelling the patient pathway from triage to the hospital emergency room to possible surgery, analysing all phases of the care process. Findings: The proposed workflow provides data on critical KPIs for the management of patients presenting AC and presents BPMN workflows that model the patient pathway from triage to the hospital emergency room to possible surgery. This model helps to optimise the organisation of the HU and to manage high risk AC cases for possible complications of the patient in the short term. Originality/Value: The study aims to be one of the first of its kind, to the authors’ knowledge, to apply BPMN to the management of AC. The knowledge gained can be taken as a reference by healthcare facilities worldwide to improve patient efficiency and manage hospital capacity.
